In the beginning of May, my club soccer team won the State Cup in Midwest Ohio. This meant a trip to Regionals'something I had been looking forward to for a long time. On May 15, 2008, I was playing in a soccer tournament, preparing for regionals. During the first game of the tournament, I received the ball, let it run across my body, and started dribbling towards the right sideline. As I planted my left foot and pivoted to the left in order to cross the ball to the far post, my left knee hyper extended and I fell to the ground. Little did I know that this move would change my life forever. At first, I was not convinced I was injured. After coming off the field, I was able to run and sprint in a straight line without pain. So, I excitedly reentered the game. However, I noticed that my left leg would give out if I tried any quick movements to the left or right. The pain would shoot from my knee throughout my entire leg. By the time I could regroup, my knee would give out once again. Due to the pain, I was forced to take a week off and could only pray that my knee would feel better in time for regionals. I had no intention of seeing a doctor. Afraid that something serious could be wrong, I did not want anyone to tell me I could not play in regionals. However, my parents noticed that my knee was not improving and therefore, I was reluctantly taken to my doctor's office.

In what seemed like no time, my primary care doctor had sent me to get an MRI. I couldn't erase from my mind the concerned and worried look that crossed over her face as she told me she hoped I was okay. I was starting to get an eerie feeling that I was badly injured.

I still remember the day my Dad took me to see Dr. Flanigan in order to discuss the results of the MRI. From the look on my Dad's face, I wasn't in for good news. We were sitting in the waiting room when my Dad told me the news I had dreaded. I couldn't believe it. Why me? I had regionals coming up in less than a month and had worked so incredibly hard to get to this point. While I gathered myself, my Dad told me we would be working with Dr. Flanigan. All out of sorts, I walked into Dr. Flanigan's office and I was immediately put at ease by the comforting and reassuring smile on Dr. Flanigan's face. He told me that I had torn my ACL and severely damaged my meniscus. He understood I was in a hard position but he fervently reassured me that he would do everything he could to get me back to playing at an even higher level in as little time as possible. Of course I would miss regionals, but the big concern was my health in the long run. The expected rehab time was 6-8 months. I had ACL reconstruction surgery in June and wanted to be back by November for a big tournament in which my team was playing. This allowed me 6 months for rehab. Dr. Flanigan was never skeptical.

On the day of my surgery, Dr. Flanigan came to greet me with that recognizable smile and reassurance. He promised me that I was in great hands. For some reason, there was not a doubt in my mind. I trusted Dr. Flanigan and his team. They made me feel comfortable and safe. After awaking from anesthesia, Dr. Flanigan informed me that my meniscus damage had been worse than the MRI had shown. However, the surgery went flawlessly!

I cannot stress enough the vital role Dr. Flanigan played in my rehabilitation process. Throughout the entire process, Dr. Flanigan provided endless moral support and encouragement. He reassured me during every checkup that I was on track. He told me to keep my head up and to stay strong; that I had come so far. Dr. Flanigan congratulated me on my success. I never felt like just another patient in his office. I felt like a good friend. Dr. Flanigan knew me personally! He took the time to know my parents and sister, different activities I was interested in, and asked me questions that showed me he really cared about me as a person and not just my knee. I looked forward to my appointments with Dr. Flanigan. I remember being excited to see him and the team that had helped every step of the way. Due to Dr. Flanigan's amazing support and flawless surgery, I returned to playing at a highly competitive level in just 5 months! I was ecstatic. I truly think that the expedited time of recovery and the confidence with which I came back to play was a direct result of working with Dr. Flanigan. After this experience, I would never pick anyone else to operate on my knee!

Today, my knee feels amazing! There are some days where my knee becomes sore after an intense game or when the playing field is uneven. However, I have no complaints!

  • Dr Flanigan has the most incredible bedside manner and exhibits genuine care and concern for patient well being. He takes the time to answer all questions and delivers the unpopular news with compassion and thoughtfulness. He has excellent staff members assisting him and they have all exhibited top notch professionalism and care. Specific to performing the surgery, Dr Flanigan visited me at the hospital to make sure I was fully prepared and assured me he would give me the strongest knee possible, before performing the surgery. My parents said he kept them informed with great details and he answered all of their questions. I'm recovering now, and while it's a long journey, I am well on my way and my post op appointments with him are going extremely well. I would highly recommend Dr. Flanigan to others, especially family and friends!

  • I was referred to him for a second opinion. He was much better than the first referral (affiliated with Riverside), and Dr Flanigan performed my surgery [new ACL and cartilage trimming] My whole experience with the OSU Sports Medicine Center has been excellent. The professional staff I've worked with: nurses, physician's assistants, physical therapists, exercise physiologists... they all seem to be top notch people who believe in what they're doing. One of the best experiences I've had with the medical community.
