Dr. Flanigan performed ACL reconstruction on my right knee in 2013 and my left knee in 2014. I am extremely pleased with his work and highly recommend him for anyone with a knee injury. My left knee injury occurred in 2010 and I was misdiagnosed by a different Doctor as having a minor MCL tear. I injured my right knee in 2012. Again, this injury was misdiagnosed by a Doctor, who actually referred me to Dr. Flanigan for a potential surgery to remove a ganglion cyst in my right knee. Upon meeting Dr. Flanigan, not only did he inform me that my right ACL was torn, the cyst was nothing to worry about (surgery not necessary), and that my left ACL was long gone (since 2010)! Dr. Flanigan was very willing to work with me to find a way to continue with my roller derby career that season despite the loss of both my ACLs (a gamble of course, a decision for which I take full responsibility). I finished my 2013 season without additional injury to either knee but wearing braces on both knees. Then, I had my surgeries(each knee, a year apart) to repair the damage. I am very grateful to Dr. Flanigan for fixing my knees. I am an extremely active person and I could not be happier with his work. Thank you Dr. Flanigan.

My son has a knee injury playing football. While I am a OSU sport fanatic, I never thought I would ever bring my son to OSU. I didn't want anyone "learning" on my son. Dr. Flanigan was AMAZING! He ensured that all our questions were answered when the option of surgery became inevitable. My son is doing better than we anticipated in such a short.

Thank you, Dr. Flanigan. If the situation ever come up that we need you again (perish the thought) I will have not doubt your office will be the first one I call!

I first met Dr. Flanigan in July of 2006, at age 47, when a scope performed elsewhere failed to achieve the desired results on my torn meniscus. A friend who works with the medical community at OSU clued me in to Dr. Flanigan's excellent reputation and expertise. I will be forever thankful to my friend, and to Dr. Flanigan and his associates. With Dr. Flanigan preforming a scope and surgery on my knee in 2006, to best address my damage, I have managed to deal with my knee's limitations and discomfort for the past 9 years, with relative ease. I readily drive more than 70 miles each way to receive consistently prompt & excellent care from Dr. Flanigan & the whole OSU Sports Med staff. Dr. Flanigan has guided me through the medical options that have allowed me to have typical activity. I hold Dr. Flanigan in high regard, and the professional trust relationship we have built is also much like a friendship. He is dedicated to his patients, and is simply a nice guy. He answers questions with clarity and he is always teaching, both me, and the very lucky students he has with him. I would, and do, recommend Dr. Flanigan to anyone seeking cutting edge knee care.

Dr. Flanigan was the first doctor to properly diagnose and treat my symptoms. For the past 5 years I have had on-again, off-again pain and inflammation in my left knee. I attributed it to micro-tears in my patellar tendon that I had been diagnosed with in 2006. Since then I had gone through physical therapy, with limited success, but the pain and inflammation would always return. The first time I met with Dr. Flanigan he looked at my inflamed knee and said "A tear in your tendon should not cause that much inflammation. I think you may have gout." Two weeks later the results came back; high levels of uric acid, the cause of gout, in the fluid in my knee. Dr. Flanigan repaired my tendon, removed the tophi from the tendon and the joint, and after 4 months of physical therapy I am back to doing the things I love; running and golfing. If it had not been for Dr. Flanigan and his "out of the box" thinking and diagnosis I would still be in pain today and be depressed and without answers. No other doctor was able to get me back on my feet and give me a life without constant pain and agitation. I owe a world of thanks to Dr. Flanigan and his team. There are great doctors out there; Dr. Flanigan is one of them.

I was pretty devastated when I injured my ACL the second time!

Thankfully, I was in the able hands of one of the best surgeons for knee related injuries. Dr Flanigan and his staff are all extremely talented and qualified as evident from the outcome of my surgery.

They were always patient and understanding with my needs. They were always available, sometimes on short notice when I needed help. The care was very personalized tailored based on my needs and progress and the same level of competence was continued even months after my surgery through my recovery back to active sports.

I recommend Dr Flanigan very highly for all knee related orthopedic needs!

On April 21st, 2013 I got severely injured in a rugby match. The first couple doctors I saw really had no definitive idea what was going on in my knee. They were not helpful at all. I was lucky enough to be able to see Dr. Flanigan. He helped tremendously, he was able to correctly diagnose what had happen to my knee. As I had fractured my tibia, tore my ACL, MCL, and calf. After two flawless surgeries and the absolute tremendous care and treatment by Dr. Flanigan. I am now able to run around and do the things I use to be able to do. Some days I never thought I would every be able to go back to do those things. However, Dr. Flanigan always made me believe I could through hard work, his care, and his attention to my case directly. I could not be more pleased and blessed about the care and attention I was given from Dr. Flanigan. If anyone came to me asking for a knee doctor I would send them to Dr. Flanigan 10 out of 10 times without hesitation.

During an adult recreation hockey game I had a collision that torn up my left knee. My MRI revealed a grade 3 MCL strain, complete tear of my ACL, torn and flipped lateral meniscus, and a torn medical meniscus. After my MRI consultation and initial meeting with Dr. Flannigan for the first time, I was scheduled for surgery within the week. He was able to repair all torn ligaments and my torn menisci in one surgery and remove scar tissue that had formed. Dr. Flannigan and the PT staff had me running in 6 months, skating in 9 month and playing hockey in a year. His staff was honest, friendly and personal, I couldn’t ask for better staff in dealing with repairing 4 injuries in my surgery.

IN September 2011 my son , Mason, tore his acl, pcl, and mcl in a soccer collision. This injury also involved some cartilage damage.Dr. Flanigan and his team repaired my son,s knee in a 6-1/2 hour surgery.Mason is now a student at The College of Wooster and is a member of the track team. Thanks to the superior skills of Dr. Flanigan, Mason is again a competitive athlete !!!

In the spring of 2011 I tore my ACL and meniscus playing basketball. Sports and exercise has always been extremely important to my lifestyle. Being that I just turned 30 years old I felt my playing days were over. At best I would need a bulky brace and be limited in certain activities. Thanks to the entire OSU sports medicine team led by Dr. Flanigan I am back to participating 100%. I feel they were very upfront with me and were able to meet all of my requests. I would highly recommend Dr. Flanigan.

I wouldn't be dancing again if it weren't for Dr. Flanigan. While preparing to dance the Nutcracker, in BalletMet's production, I heard the dreaded 'pop' in my knee. After being seen by Dr Flanigan and his team, he knew surgery was necessary. He performed a meniscal repair and I returned to high level of performing 10 months later (with the help of OSU's sports med physical therapy). He is a very caring and understanding doctor--he explained everything I needed to know throughout the process. Thanks Dr Flanigan!

- Jackson Sarver

I've never had any kind of surgery before, and approached my meniscal repair procedure with a bit of apprehension. Things couldn't have gone more smoothly for me - Dr. Flanigan is a gifted surgeon. I have suffered virtually no pain, needed minimal rehab, and am back to being fully active mere weeks after surgery. Every aspect of this organization has far exceeded any expectations I had prior to surgery. In this day when we so often lament poor quality service, it is refreshing to see a doctor and his staff so clearly striving for and achieving excellence. I'd recommend Dr. Flanigan and crew to anyone!

On September 25th 2012, I tore my ACL and meniscus during an intramural soccer game. After immediately seeing my homeotwn physician/orthosurgeon and other doctors in the area for second opinions, it was not until about a month later when I had an appointment with Dr. Flanigan. Dr. Flanigan was the first expert who knew what was in the MRI. It was a relief after making rounds all over northeast and central Ohio. Dr. Flanigan and his staff were extremely flexible and helpful towards my needs. He understood that I needed to be ready to go in May for Army training upon graduation. My surgery was performed November 1st and I was officially released from physical therapy with full function and mobility yesterday. Dr. Flanigan and his staff, as well as the Physical Therapy Staff at Martha Morehouse Medical Plaza, have performed a miracle for me. With this being my second ACL surgery, the prior one being a patellar tendon graft and this one being the hamstring graft on the opposite leg, I would tell anyone and everyone to go for the hamstring graft. Dr. Flanigan sure knows what he is doing and he always puts his patients' needs first! Thank you!

Today, a year after my ACI surgery, I can honestly say that I am incredibly excited about being able to return to being an athlete, leading that lifestyle of an active person as I always have been as the pain and suffering (both mental and physical) caused by the injury devastated me. I felt I lost myself when I could no longer play the sport I loved. I identified myself my whole life as an athlete and although my life was full of other, outside of sports achievements such as a career and family, I felt lost without my sport and the constant knee pain.

I saw hope with ACI. And although this surgery is complicated, has risks and a long road to recovery, the decision to get the surgery was a 'no-brainer' as Dr. Flanigan is the expert in the field of cartilage restoration, far superior to most. I also saw that Dr. Flanigan vested something personal in getting me back on my feet so to say. I knew that every member of his staff and his office, no matter what day, personally cared. It was a very difficult time in my life but Dr. Flanigan's experience, knowledge, dedication, personal commitment to helping and a realistic mastery about my LONG-TERM well-being put me at ease. The risks were talked about and calculated, while realistic expectations were set. I feared nothing as I had a huge wall of support. Without any scientific terminology, I had a bad case of bone on bone, and my holes with no cartilage were very significant. I was 32 and in terrible, terrible pain. Today, I have no pain. The knee with ACI feels better than the one without it. I see this procedure as a miracle although the recovery mostly depended on my own willingness to work hard and follow all the directions. Knowing that Dr. Flanigan only wanted the most successful recovery really motivated me to do well in physical therapy and work even harder at home. I felt Dr. Flanigan and his staff, including OSU sports Medicine and Rehab Center, believe in me and that a successful recovery was the only option. And successful it was as I have returned to playing the sport I love. My family and I are very happy. I feel full of hope as I did back then as a college athlete.

On September 9th, 2010, my knee was severely injured during a soccer game. When it first happened I thought i had broken my tibia, and I feared that my high school athletic career was over. However, my fear of a broken tibia was highly underestimated. After being carried off the field and attempting to walk, I realized that my leg was not broken, but something else was definitely wrong. The next day, we scheduled an MRI, and the results were traumatizing. I had torn my ACL, MCL, PCL, Meniscus and practically all of the cartilage in my knee. As a three sport athlete, I was torn apart. I thought that I would never be able to run or compete again. I spent the next week in a depressed stupor while scheduling appointments with various doctors and surgeons. I saw three doctors before I visited The OSU Medical Center and Dr. Flanigan, and by that time I was sullen and ill-tempered when it came to talking to doctors about what had to be done with my knee. I was terrified to undergo the procedures that everyone said I would need just to be able to walk again. However, Dr. Flanigan was the only doctor that I felt was completely qualified to undertake and fix the mess the was my knee. In Dr. Flanigan's office, I didn't feel like a patient; I felt as if I was someone that all of the staff, and Dr. Flanigan himself, had known their whole lives. I knew that they would do their best to repair my knee and return me to the athlete I was before. I underwent a seven hour surgery on September 28th, 2010 under the hand of Dr. Flanigan. When I awoke, he told me that my knee was worse than the MRI had shown, but everything had went flawlessly, and for the first time in three weeks, I wasn't worried. As the weeks passed, I had routine checkup appointments with Dr. Flanigan, and every time he assured me that everything was healing perfectly. And every time, I would leave his office with more confidence that I was going to be a great athlete again. I just finished my freshman year of college, and I was a part of the varsity track and field team as a pole vaulter and sprinter. I also played on the intramural soccer team, and led my team to a first place finish. As of now, I am still training and working out my knee to get even better, but all of my collegiate athletic achievements were made possible by Dr. Flanigan. I am glad that I chose him to repair my knee because it now works as good as it ever did.

Thank you Dr. Flanigan and staff for helping pursue and achieve my dreams of being a collegiate athlete.

In the beginning of May, my club soccer team won the State Cup in Midwest Ohio. This meant a trip to Regionals…something I had been looking forward to for a long time. On May 15, 2008, I was playing in a soccer tournament, preparing for regionals. During the first game of the tournament, I received the ball, let it run across my body, and started dribbling towards the right sideline. As I planted my left foot and pivoted to the left in order to cross the ball to the far post, my left knee hyper extended and I fell to the ground. Little did I know that this move would change my life forever. At first, I was not convinced I was injured. After coming off the field, I was able to run and sprint in a straight line without pain. So, I excitedly reentered the game. However, I noticed that my left leg would give out if I tried any quick movements to the left or right. The pain would shoot from my knee throughout my entire leg. By the time I could regroup, my knee would give out once again. Due to the pain, I was forced to take a week off and could only pray that my knee would feel better in time for regionals. I had no intention of seeing a doctor. Afraid that something serious could be wrong, I did not want anyone to tell me I could not play in regionals. However, my parents noticed that my knee was not improving and therefore, I was reluctantly taken to my doctor’s office.

In what seemed like no time, my primary care doctor had sent me to get an MRI. I couldn’t erase from my mind the concerned and worried look that crossed over her face as she told me she hoped I was okay. I was starting to get an eerie feeling that I was badly injured.

I still remember the day my Dad took me to see Dr. Flanigan in order to discuss the results of the MRI. From the look on my Dad’s face, I wasn’t in for good news. We were sitting in the waiting room when my Dad told me the news I had dreaded. I couldn’t believe it. Why me? I had regionals coming up in less than a month and had worked so incredibly hard to get to this point. While I gathered myself, my Dad told me we would be working with Dr. Flanigan. All out of sorts, I walked into Dr. Flanigan's office and I was immediately put at ease by the comforting and reassuring smile on Dr. Flanigan's face. He told me that I had torn my ACL and severely damaged my meniscus. He understood I was in a hard position but he fervently reassured me that he would do everything he could to get me back to playing at an even higher level in as little time as possible. Of course I would miss regionals, but the big concern was my health in the long run. The expected rehab time was 6-8 months. I had ACL reconstruction surgery in June and wanted to be back by November for a big tournament in which my team was playing. This allowed me 6 months for rehab. Dr. Flanigan was never skeptical.

On the day of my surgery, Dr. Flanigan came to greet me with that recognizable smile and reassurance. He promised me that I was in great hands. For some reason, there was not a doubt in my mind. I trusted Dr. Flanigan and his team. They made me feel comfortable and safe. After awaking from anesthesia, Dr. Flanigan informed me that my meniscus damage had been worse than the MRI had shown. However, the surgery went flawlessly!

I cannot stress enough the vital role Dr. Flanigan played in my rehabilitation process. Throughout the entire process, Dr. Flanigan provided endless moral support and encouragement. He reassured me during every checkup that I was on track. He told me to keep my head up and to stay strong; that I had come so far. Dr. Flanigan congratulated me on my success. I never felt like just another patient in his office. I felt like a good friend. Dr. Flanigan knew me personally! He took the time to know my parents and sister, different activities I was interested in, and asked me questions that showed me he really cared about me as a person and not just my knee. I looked forward to my appointments with Dr. Flanigan. I remember being excited to see him and the team that had helped every step of the way. Due to Dr. Flanigan's amazing support and flawless surgery, I returned to playing at a highly competitive level in just 5 months! I was ecstatic. I truly think that the expedited time of recovery and the confidence with which I came back to play was a direct result of working with Dr. Flanigan. After this experience, I would never pick anyone else to operate on my knee!

Today, my knee feels amazing! There are some days where my knee becomes sore after an intense game or when the playing field is uneven. However, I have no complaints!

On June 11, 2010 I was involved in a car accident. During the accident, my left knee was severely damaged. The ACL, MCL, and PCL needed to be replaced with cadaver tendons; two tibias and one achilles. My meniscus also needed work.

After spending over three hours in the wreckage, being life flighted, and spending six days in the hospital, I was very leery of doctors.

We, my family and I, met Dr. Flanigan while in the hospital, and to say the least, he truly was a breath of fresh air…. given the circumstances, that said a lot too! What an awesome attitude he has. Above all else, he made my wife and I very comfortable with the circumstances and what the healing process entailed.

During one of Dr. Flanigan and I’s initial meetings, I asked him, “Are you the right guy to do this (surgery)?” I can’t imagine this is a common question asked of Dr. Flanigan, but given the potential aftermath of the injuries sustained, I questioned if he was the best doctor to complete the vast number of surgeries involved. I wanted to make sure, given I’m an active 34 year old athlete, that I was going to get back to where I was prior to the accident. I could not afford to lose another step given my aging body! :) That was the most important thing to me. I wanted the best of the best. I was blessed, as I truly believe I received exactly that.

Dr. Flanigan performed over five total surgeries on my left knee. He, and his staff, are very knowledgeable, courteous, kind, and caring. I will say, out of any doctor I have ever been affiliated with, from physicians to surgeons, he has always made me feel as I am the only patient in his office. He answers all my questions thoroughly, is very personable, and treats all his patients with the respect and time each one needs and deserves.

Thanks to Dr. Flanigan I’m currently back playing competitive flag football, competitive softball, running, and squatting over 400lbs in the gym.

I’m proud that Dr. Flanigan is my orthopedic. Do what’s best for you as I did. Best of luck, and thank you Dr. Flanigan!

I am currently an Orthopaedic Surgery Resident at OSU medical center. Every day I am incredibly thankful to have the opportunity to work at an outstanding academic institution that focuses on providing the best evidence based medicine and personalized health care. When I matched for residency at OSU last Spring, it was one of the best moments of my life. This past year has been a tough year for me. During the residency matching process, I developed a devastating knee problem. When it came to making decisions for where to rank places for where I wanted to train as a surgeon, no matter how I looked at the process the only place I could imagine being at from both a surgical training standpoint and a patient standpoint was Ohio State Medical Center. My knee problem was incredibly complex and in my heart I knew that only OSU and Dr. Flanigan could help me with my problem.

Dr. Flanigan took on my case and focused on helping me achieve immediate pain relief with my knee and once we had a diagnosis he brought together a team of physicians, physical therapists and medical staff to address my severe knee issues. Given the extent of the problem and my background in knee research and orthopaedics, I was very concerned about the outcomes of my knee problem and what it meant for my future. He was 100% supportive, listened to all of my concerns and met with me on multiple occasions to help me cope with the diagnoses and surgical planning. It was a really hard decision to have a cartilage restoration procedure just months before starting my work as an intern in the hospital. However, Dr. Flanigan supported me throughout the process and kept me involved in the decision making every step of the way. He was very attentive to my needs, followed me very closely post-operatively and encouraged me throughout the tough rehabilitation process. Just several months after my surgery, I was pain free for the first time in 10 years. We had an MRI several months after my procedure that demonstrated outstanding results of the cartilage restoration procedure. It made me a true believer in Autologous Chondrocyte Implant process- replacement of cartilage in a young, active knee is an amazing achievement.

Dr. Flanigan’s compassion, empathy and willingness to listen has made a major difference in my knee health and my life. His commitment to the medical community and to the education of future clinicians is outstanding and his active research pursuits are just a few examples of his dedication to the field of orthopaedics and to helping improve the quality of life for patients. The great success with cartilage restoration that I experienced and Dr. Flanigan’s energetic personality and sincere belief in cartilage restoration has left an indelible impression. As a medical professional, I hope that someday I can make as much a difference in someone else’s life as he has in mine.
